Alcatel Telecom Netherlands-Goes Live with Wavetrend's Active RFID

This sophisticated system, delivered and implemented by Transquest Apeldoorn (NL), not only fulfils Alcatel’s needs and requirements for ‘handsfree’ access control management and automatic time registration of employees, but also provides evacuation combined with unique muster control.

Transquest’s solution is based on Active RFID, manufactured by Wavetrend, with Active tags transmitting their unique signal every 1.5 sec. These signals are received by Wavetrend readers, which are connected in strategic positions in the Alcatel Building. In this way handsfree access control for the parking garage and offices for employees is achieved with a time stamp (time-in/time-out) being automatically registered. On every floor readers detect and register the presence of tags which are associated with either people or assets. The system is totally dynamic, and all movements are recorded in the software.

“We are very excited about this system.” Hans van der Kooij, Manager General Services of Alcatel Telecom Netherlands says. “For a long time we were looking for a ‘user friendly’ time registration and access control system for our employees. In addition, due to our Evacuation Policy, it is of paramount importance that we have a system that reports to us in ‘real time’ the whereabouts of both employees and visitors, in our offices.”

“The only thing that our employees need to do is carry their Active tag with them. Registration is completely automatic. SmartTag, produced by Advanced Positioning Systems, the software application that holds the authorisation levels of all employees, visitors and objects, is very open and easy to integrate with our own applications.”

John Melchers, Manager Director of Transquest, based in The Netherlands stated: “Alcatel is a good example of an organisation which has utilized most of the features available in the SmartTag software application, which, combined with Active RFID, is a sophisticated solution. Not only does it provide access control and time and attendance management for employees, but it also protects audio visual equipment and laptops that have been equipped with tags. This enables Alcatel to track and trace these objects for audit purposes as well as for theft prevention. The system detects directly when a laptop leaves the Alcatel premises without its rightful owner. A direct alarm is the consequence followed by security personnel intervention who are backed up by an audit trail."
