Wavetrend Tracks Visitors at Apenheul

There is no zoo in the world like Apenheul. Situated within the woods of the beautiful "Park Berg en Bos" in Apeldoorn, Apenheul harbors over thirty species of primate monkeys, many of them ranging freely among the visitors. Others live on large islands where you can observe them happily going about their business.

Within this unique environment, visitors are able to experience close contact with the wildlife. Specially reserved areas allow the monkeys to walk and climb in close proximity to the visitor-area which is very popular with children, who can pet the animals when they are coming over to check for candy!

However, during holidaystime, Apenheul welcomes the largest amount of visitors and the monkeys tend to stay away from the visitors, because it is too busy for them. Interaction between the monkeys and visitors is the main selling point at Apenheul, so they were kean to analyse when certain attractions were busiest.

In order to protect visitors possessions, they are provided with a Monkey-proof bag, which must be returned at the end of the visit.

This simple process was the solution to analysing visitor routing through the park.

At the end of 2004, 3000 monkey-proof bags with embeded Wavetrend L-TG501 tags had been supplied. At strategic locations in the park, readers have been mounted in specially designed cases. Apenheul went live with this solution during a holiday -period and collected all visitor movements throughout the park. This data demonstrated that large concentrations of visitors occurred at special presentations and feeding times. For Apenheul this has enabled them to commence redesigning the park to providing an enhenaced experience for both the primates and visitors.
